CommandEleven was quoted by Express Tribune over the anger towards CNN for interviewing TTP leader Noor Wali Mehsud. Analysts termed the CNN’s interview of Noor Wali Mehsud an attempt to legitimise the terrorist organisation and place it parallel to the Afghan Taliban, despite the fact that the TTP was a US-designated terrorist organisation, already neutralised by Pakistan, while the US and other countries are holding negotiations with the Afghan Taliban.

Right of Surprise

In the last two decades the number of Af-Pak hands has sky rocketed. Most of them seem to have slept on the wheel and now suddenly woken up in a state of dumbfoundedness. They’re shocked that the US was leaving Afghanistan – precipitously; and dismayed that the Taliban were gaining ground – exponentially. That reminds me of Rip Van Winkle who also slept for twenty years.

Beyond Hubris

Indeed, the US is making much heavy weather of exiting Afghanistan, and of course it entered the Country in a fit of bullheadedness, Al-Qaeda having shown the red rag – and without much forethought. But that happens most of the time, and since even the best laid-out plans fly out of window after the initial salvos; it’s the afterthought that counts. And that’s where America went awfully awry.
